פרשת תצוה

Exodus 29:45Sefaria

וְשָׁ֣כַנְתִּ֔י בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהָיִ֥יתִי לָהֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִֽים׃

The ultimate purpose of the Exodus from Egypt and the construction of the Tabernacle is a profound promise: God establishing a deep, direct connection with His people by dwelling among them.

Commentators explore how this divine presence actually rests within the camp. One perspective focuses on the physical and geographical layout of the Israelites in the desert. The Tabernacle sits exactly at the center, surrounded first by the Levites and then by the rest of the tribes facing the four directions of the compass. This careful arrangement maintains clear boundaries and preserves the purity of the camp [אבן עזרא, חזקוני]. However, the primary approach among commentators emphasizes a broader, spiritual reality. God's presence is not confined to the physical structure of the Tabernacle or the Temple. Instead, it spreads outward, resting within the entire nation and its gatherings, even when it remains invisible to the eye [העמק דבר, מלבי״ם, קאסוטו, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The visible glory in the Tabernacle serves merely as a physical expression and evidence that God is truly present within the people themselves [רש״ר הירש].

This divine presence is brought into reality through the service of Aaron the High Priest. The burning of the incense plays a special role in this process. Unlike other offerings brought to atone for sins, the incense represents joy, forgiveness, and connection [שפתי כהן]. Because of this close presence, God willingly accepts the service of the Israelites and listens to their prayers [ספורנו].

The promise that God will be their God is a commitment to direct, personal care. He acts as a dedicated leader who guides their actions, watches over them, protects them, and provides for all their needs [העמק דבר, קאסוטו, רש״ר הירש]. On a deeper level, this direct leadership frees the Israelites from the boundaries of nature and the influence of astrology. Because God leads them without any intermediaries, they are not subject to the alignment of the stars and have no reason to fear heavenly signs. Through prophecy, God saves them from natural disasters, and this intense closeness guarantees the eternal survival of the nation [ספורנו, רלב״ג].

This personal care and divine presence are the very reasons the Israelites left Egypt. A spiritual principle states that God does not allow His presence to rest in a place where someone else suffered punishment on a person's behalf. Based on this rule, the heavy plagues inflicted upon the Egyptians should have actually prevented God from dwelling among the Israelites. However, the punishment of the Egyptians was not an act of revenge. It was done for the sake of God's name, as it was impossible to free the Israelites and build the Tabernacle without first defeating the enemy. Through this, the Israelites understand that their rescue from Egypt was never just about physical freedom; it was entirely for the higher purpose of having God dwell directly among them [חתם סופר].
