Judges 20:13Sefaria

The united tribes of Israel stand before the tribe of Benjamin with a firm ultimatum. They demand the surrender of the men responsible for a severe crime, seeking to cleanse the nation. This call to action offers Benjamin a chance to prove they also want to wipe away the dark stain attached to their community [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. At the same time, with the entire assembly of Israel now gathered, the other tribes recognize they must take control of the judgment to prevent a lasting national disgrace [אלשיך].

The rest of the nation insists on executing the criminals themselves rather than allowing Benjamin to handle the punishment. Because the members of Benjamin are personally connected to the perpetrators, they are considered biased and unfit to judge the case [אלשיך]. The ultimate goal of this demand is the complete eradication of evil from the world and the removal of the wrongdoers from the nation [מצודת ציון], [מצודת דוד]. By taking charge, the other tribes shift the responsibility of justice from Benjamin to the collective, ensuring that the entire nation purges the evil together [מלבי״ם].

Despite this united plea, the tribe of Benjamin completely rejects the demand [מצודת ציון]. Rather than handing over the guilty men, they rally for war and ignite a violent conflict [מלבי״ם]. Through this collective refusal, the entire tribe becomes complicit. By choosing to protect the evildoers, they share in the guilt and bring severe condemnation upon themselves [אלשיך].

This defensive stance has a profound impact on the tribe's spiritual identity. Because they support such a disgrace within Israel, they are conceptually stripped of their noble lineage, distancing them from the legacy of their righteous ancestor, Benjamin. Yet, this break is not permanent. A subtle door of hope remains open, indicating that if they repent and turn away from their destructive path, they can restore their standing and once again be worthy of carrying their father's name [מנחת שי].
