וְרִבְקָה֙ אָֽמְרָ֔ה אֶל־יַעֲקֹ֥ב בְּנָ֖הּ לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֤ה שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ אֶת־אָבִ֔יךָ מְדַבֵּ֛ר אֶל־עֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִ֖יךָ לֵאמֹֽר׃

Within a complex family dynamic where Isaac acts in favor of Esau, Rebecca counters by acting for the benefit of Jacob, whom she deeply loves [בכור שור]. As she sets her plan into motion, she relies on a mix of strategic wisdom and divine guidance.

Commentators differ on exactly when Rebecca formulated this plan. Some suggest it was a premeditated strategy. Knowing Isaac intended to bless Esau, she prepared the deception long before Esau ever left for the field [קונטרס חיבה יתירה]. Conversely, others believe she acted immediately upon a sudden revelation. In this view, she was struck by the Holy Spirit at that exact moment and rushed to tell Jacob that she had just heard the conversation, meaning there was still a brief window of time to act before Esau returned [אור החיים]. Her awareness of the conversation was not the result of ordinary eavesdropping. Instead, it was a prophetic illumination. The Divine Presence, which hears all things, revealed the information to Rebecca, who then transmitted this divine directive to Jacob [פני דוד]. She even hints to Jacob that her knowledge came directly through the Holy Spirit [שפתי כהן].

When relating the conversation to Jacob, the way Rebecca frames her words carries deep significance. The primary approach among commentators is that she simply quotes Isaac exactly or conveys the precise essence of his message [ביאור יש״ר, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רד״ק]. However, others suggest she carefully adjusted her phrasing to avoid speaking a falsehood, ensuring she relayed Isaac's core intent without claiming to quote him word for word [אור החיים]. A unique perspective suggests a hidden layer of secrecy. Isaac, fearing Jacob might interfere, secretly instructed Esau to speak in a soft voice as an identifying sign. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Rebecca discovered this secret and instructed Jacob to speak softly, explaining that this was the exact password his father had established [פרדס יוסף].

When Rebecca mentions Esau, she refers to him as Jacob's brother merely as a figure of speech, well aware that the two are as fundamentally different as light and darkness [אור החיים]. To ensure Jacob's full cooperation, she intentionally alters certain details of Isaac's request. She omits the instruction to go out to the field and hunt, focusing solely on the act of bringing the food for the sake of the Commandment [שפתי כהן]. This reassures Jacob that bringing home-cooked food is perfectly acceptable, a detail that aligns with Isaac's own preference to avoid eating from Esau's home due to dietary concerns [העמק דבר].

Most profoundly, Rebecca changes Isaac's phrasing from "before my death" to "before God." She does this to uproot any fear in Jacob's heart that a blessing intended for Esau would not work for him. Through this subtle shift, she teaches him a vital spiritual principle. A prophet is merely a channel for the Divine will. When a blessing is given before God, it is God Himself who directs it to the truly deserving individual, completely independent of the blesser's original intent [מלבי״ם].
