ויקרא, פרק כ״ו, פסוק כ״ד

פרשת בחוקתי

Leviticus 26:24Sefaria

The relationship between human actions and the Divine response reaches a point of severe escalation, where the very nature of God's providence changes completely. When the people act with stubborn opposition, God mirrors their behavior. Operating on a principle of measure for measure, He responds exactly as they act [חזקוני]. He stands in absolute opposition to all their ways [ביאור יש״ר], reacting with harsh and aggressive force [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A deeper perspective reveals a fundamental shift in how God interacts with the people. In earlier stages, God brought suffering that was precisely targeted and clearly connected to their sins. The intention was to awaken them to the direct link between their actions and the consequences so they would repent. However, when the people ignore this message and continue their stubborn path, God changes His method. He no longer sends punishments that clearly mirror their bad deeds [אור החיים]. Instead, He brings sudden, unexpected blows driven by a Divine providence that is deliberately directed against them [העמק דבר].

As God strikes them directly for their sins [אבן עזרא], He unleashes a complex response of seven distinct blows [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These heavy disasters bear no obvious resemblance to the people's specific actions. They include the sword, siege, plague, being handed over to an enemy, and a devastating famine that alone is equal in severity to three separate troubles combined [אור החיים].
