פרשת תולדות

Genesis 27:11Sefaria

A fateful moment stands between a mother and her son, as a plan of deception is proposed to secure a father's blessings. Rather than rejecting the idea outright, Jacob responds with a practical argument illustrating why the scheme is doomed to fail. His involvement stems from a deep sense of duty and obedience to his mother, rather than a personal desire to deceive [רש״ר הירש]. Furthermore, he is driven by a profound reverence and righteousness, desperate not to damage his father's honor [אברבנאל]. Even so, his fundamental willingness to participate, with his primary concern being the risk of exposure, remains a point of surprise [ברכת אשר].

Jacob's central argument rests on the extreme physical differences between the two brothers. Esau is described as a hairy man, completely covered in hair, even on his hands and neck [רש״י, גור אריה, ביאור יש״ר, רד״ק, מחוקקי יהודה]. Since Esau was born hairy, this trait likely intensified over the years [ביאור שטיינזלץ], leading some to view his hairiness as a mark of full physical maturity [הדר זקנים, חזקוני, פרדס יוסף]. In stark contrast, Jacob describes himself as a smooth man, representing the exact opposite physical extreme [אבן עזרא, ביאור יש״ר]. This does not imply he was entirely hairless, but rather that he had normal, even skin without dense patches of hair [מחוקקי יהודה]. Compared to the wild and hairy Esau, Jacob was considered completely smooth [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This physical contrast raises a practical question: why does Jacob only fear his father's sense of touch, without worrying that his voice might betray him? It is possible that the brothers' voices were identical [פרדס יוסף, ברכת אשר], or that Jacob planned to remain silent or alter his voice [אברבנאל]. More fundamentally, there is a distinct difference between the senses. While it is easy to misidentify a voice or confuse similar sounds, it is impossible to mistake two absolute opposites. Esau was unusually hairy, and Jacob was completely smooth. In this scenario, the sense of touch provides absolute certainty, leaving no room for doubt, which led Jacob to conclude that faking his identity was practically impossible [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

On a deeper, spiritual level, these physical traits hint at profound differences in the brothers' souls and futures. Esau's hairy nature evokes associations with forces of destruction, while Jacob's smoothness symbolizes his destiny as the portion and inheritance of God [רקנאטי]. Another perspective suggests a hidden connection, noting that the Hebrew letters for "hairy" can be rearranged to spell "rich." According to this view, the brothers had a spiritual agreement: Esau would take the wealth of the material world, while Jacob would remain a smooth man, akin to a blank page with no share in earthly pursuits. Because his father's blessings were intended for material success, Jacob feared that accepting them would violate this spiritual pact, causing heaven to view him as breaking their agreement [שפתי כהן].
