Daniel 11:1Sefaria

Behind the scenes of human history operates a complex network of spiritual forces. Heavenly princes and angels struggle and cooperate to carry out the will of God and shape the destiny of nations. Continuing his earlier message, the angel Gabriel, rather than Daniel, is the one speaking [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Gabriel reveals a system of mutual support between himself and Michael, the guardian angel of the Israelites. He explains that just as Michael currently assists him in his spiritual battle against the heavenly prince of Persia, Gabriel previously stood by Michael's side [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This earlier intervention took place during the first year of Darius the Mede, a sensitive transitional period marked by the fall of the Babylonian empire and the rise of the Medo-Persian empire. During this shift in global power, the spiritual princes of Media and Persia sought to oppress the Israelites. To block their efforts, Gabriel acted as a powerful reinforcement, providing strength and protection [מצודת ציון] to Michael [רש״י, יוסף אבן יחיא]. The primary goal of this support was likely to help Michael secure the throne for Cyrus, which would ultimately allow the Israelites to return to their homeland [מצודת דוד].

While the primary approach among commentators is that Gabriel directed his support toward Michael, an alternative perspective suggests that his help was aimed at King Darius himself. According to this view, Darius looked favorably upon the Israelites after witnessing Daniel's greatness, even vowing to permit the rebuilding of the Temple. The angel's task was to strengthen the king's resolve, ensuring that his good intentions would actually be fulfilled through his son-in-law, Cyrus [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, these accounts of angelic battles and mutual aid are expressed in human terms to illustrate a profound, elevated reality. All earthly shifts, such as changes in government and historical turning points, are a direct result of these spiritual events and the decisions God makes in the heavens [אבן עזרא].
