דניאל, פרק י״א, פסוק ג׳

Global power shifts inevitably pave the way for new, undisputed leaders to emerge on the world stage. Out of the Greek empire, a mighty king is destined to rise, universally identified by commentators as Alexander the Great.

His reign is characterized by a vast, comprehensive, and wondrous dominion. The details of his expansive government are kept brief, simply because Daniel had already been shown these specifics in a previous vision [מלבי״ם].

A key aspect of this ruler is his absolute freedom of action, allowing him to do exactly as he pleases. This total control unfolds on two complementary levels. On a global scale, he acts without restraint because all nations will submit to his authority, leaving no one capable of resisting his power [יוסף אבן יחיא]. On a more focused level, his unstoppable will is demonstrated through his decisive conflict with Darius, the king of Persia. Alexander will weaken and ultimately kill Darius, inheriting his kingdom and completely subjugating the entire Persian Empire under Greek rule [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא].
