Genesis 31:4Sefaria

Jacob is on the verge of a fateful decision: leaving his father-in-law's home. To prepare for this departure, he orchestrates a secret family gathering for a deeply sensitive consultation, deliberately held far from the prying eyes and listening ears of the local household.

He summons Rachel and Leah specifically [משכיל לדוד]. The primary approach among commentators notes that Rachel is approached first because she is considered the foundation of the home and the original reason Jacob arrived to work for Laban in the first place—a reality that even Leah’s descendants would later acknowledge The invitation is extended exclusively to these two because they are the leading women of the family, whereas the maidservants and the sons are already present in the field, tending the flocks alongside him [חזקוני]. Reaching out to his wives in this manner also demonstrates profound respect. Although Jacob possesses the right to bring his family to the Land of Israel without their formal consent, he prefers to gently persuade them rather than force the move

The choice to meet in the open field is highly calculated. Commentators agree that this setting ensures absolute secrecy from Laban's household, avoiding the risk of eavesdroppers indoors where walls have ears The need for discretion is so urgent that Jacob cannot wait until evening to discuss the matter at home. He also cannot risk updating just one wife to secretly pass the message to her sister; both must come out to the field to hear the plan together

The gathering takes place at the exact location where Jacob is tending his own separated animals, keeping a safe distance from where Laban's flocks are grazing so that Laban's shepherds will not notice the unusual meeting Remaining with his animals during such a critical moment highlights Jacob's immense dedication to his work. Even when faced with an urgent family matter, he refuses to abandon his post for a single moment, requiring his wives to come to him instead [פרדס יוסף]. Alternatively, some suggest that tending exclusively to his own animals indicates that Jacob has already ceased working for Laban. In this view, he is taking a transitional break to manage his own property, acting out of complete confidence that his wives will agree to leave with him
