וַאֲבִיכֶן֙ הֵ֣תֶל בִּ֔י וְהֶחֱלִ֥ף אֶת־מַשְׂכֻּרְתִּ֖י עֲשֶׂ֣רֶת מֹנִ֑ים וְלֹֽא־נְתָנ֣וֹ אֱלֹהִ֔ים לְהָרַ֖ע עִמָּדִֽי׃

Jacob recounts to his wives the long history of exploitation and deceit he endured at the hands of their father, Laban. Despite relentless attempts to defraud him and alter their agreements, divine providence constantly intervened to protect Jacob and guarantee his prosperity.

Laban’s behavior was defined by profound hypocrisy. He was a man who spoke smoothly while secretly plotting ruin, building up high expectations only to shatter them [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, שד״ל, רש״ר הירש, ביאור יש״ר]. This treachery began immediately. On the very day Laban seemingly agreed to Jacob's employment terms, he secretly removed all the speckled and spotted sheep from the flock to ensure Jacob could not earn his rightful wages [העמק דבר, ביאור יש״ר].

Beyond this initial fraud, Jacob reveals a historical truth about Laban's ongoing conduct that was not previously detailed during the events themselves [רמב״ן]. Whenever Laban noticed Jacob succeeding, with the flock birthing the specific color they had agreed upon, he would immediately break their pact and change the terms to a different color. He would sometimes even alter the agreement in the middle of the breeding cycle, between conception and birth [אור החיים, שד״ל, בכור שור]. This constant alteration may have also involved a direct reduction of wages, effectively leaving Jacob with only a tenth of what he had actually earned [קונטרס חיבה יתירה].

The frequency of these changes was staggering. The primary approach among commentators is that the number ten mentioned by Jacob is not meant literally, but rather serves as a common expression for a vast amount of times, as ten marks the transition from single digits to tens. However, other scholars suggest Laban changed the conditions exactly ten times: once in the first year, eight times over the four years when the flock gave birth twice annually, and once more in the final year [רד״ק בשם אביו]. Conversely, some interpret the wording to mean ten groups of ten, indicating that Laban altered the terms no fewer than a hundred times [רש״י, שפתי חכמים, דעת זקנים, הדר זקנים]. By exhausting every possible color variation over and over, Laban demonstrated pure malice, making it impossible to pass off his actions as innocent mistakes [גור אריה]. Alternative views suggest the phrasing does not refer to counting at all, but rather translates directly to "deceptions," meaning Laban committed ten distinct acts of fraud [הכתב והקבלה, בכור שור], or that it stems from an ancient Greek counting system of single units [אם למקרא].

Ultimately, Jacob makes it clear that his immense success was not the result of natural strategies, such as placing peeled branches at the water troughs, but rather the result of God's direct involvement. Whenever Laban attempted to sabotage Jacob by selecting the rarest color to minimize his earnings, God stepped in. He caused the entire flock to give birth exclusively to the specific type Laban had just chosen, entirely reversing the malicious plot and turning it into a source of overwhelming blessing and wealth for Jacob [מלבי״ם, בכור שור, שד״ל].
