Genesis 31:8Sefaria

Jacob's struggle against his father-in-law's deceit stands as a powerful testament to how human trickery ultimately fails when faced with Divine providence. Recounting the events to his wives, Jacob explains how his wages were constantly manipulated, yet heaven's blessing consistently prevailed. Laban broke their initial agreement, which originally included a variety of colors and spots—specifically small, thin marks [הדר זקנים]. Instead of honoring this, Laban began restricting Jacob's wages to just one specific type at a time. He even introduced entirely new categories of colors that were never part of the original deal, all in a calculated effort to minimize Jacob's profits Despite these restrictions, the vast majority of the flock—though perhaps not every single animal without exception—was born with the exact traits assigned to Jacob [רד״ק].

Laban's deception reached a point where he attempted to outsmart the natural order itself. Seeing that God granted Jacob success during the mating season, Laban began changing the terms of compensation after the sheep had already conceived. He would wait until the pregnancy was underway, or even until the very moment of birth, before declaring which color would belong to Jacob, assuming the physical results could no longer be altered. The primary approach among commentators is that God, who knows the secrets of the heart, knew exactly what condition Laban would declare in the future. He therefore caused the sheep to conceive from the very beginning with the exact traits Laban would eventually choose

Another perspective suggests that God performed an open miracle, physically changing the color of the fetuses in the womb or during birth to match Laban's newly imposed demands Alternatively, Jacob's framing of Laban's future declarations can be seen as a statement of deep faith: even if Laban were to invent any new condition going forward, he would never succeed in causing harm, because God had guaranteed Jacob's prosperity

There is broad agreement that the sudden abundance of sheep bearing the requested colors was not the result of Jacob placing peeled sticks in the water troughs, but rather a profound Divine miracle. In fact, once Laban began altering the terms after the flocks had already conceived, the sticks lost any potential influence, and Jacob stopped using them entirely This raises a natural question: why did Jacob bother using the sticks in the first place? The answer lies in the balance between human effort and faith. A person is expected to act within the natural world, utilizing the practical wisdom and methods available in their time. One is not permitted to sit idly by and rely exclusively on miracles, even when fully aware that true success and protection come solely from God
