סָ֭לִיתָ כׇּל־שׁוֹגִ֣ים מֵחֻקֶּ֑יךָ כִּי־שֶׁ֝֗קֶר תַּרְמִיתָֽם׃

God maintains a decisive and uncompromising stance toward those who abandon His path, ultimately exposing the deception hidden within their actions. The primary approach among commentators is that God subdues, tramples, and treads down these wrongdoers [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, המאירי, מלבי״ם, מצודות]. Others add that this response also implies a complete rejection and abandonment of the wicked [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Although this action is framed as something that has already happened, [רד״ק] explains that it is actually a prayer for the future—a plea that God will subdue those who stray. Conversely, [אבן עזרא] views it as a factual reality of the past; the author asks God for life and support precisely because he has already witnessed how God brings down the wicked.

A central tension arises when considering the nature of these wrongdoers. They are initially characterized as people who stray by mistake or without intent, yet they are simultaneously accused of deceit and lies. The primary approach among commentators is that this highlights their deep hypocrisy. These individuals outwardly pretend that their sins are mere accidents or innocent blunders. However, God sees through their fake innocence, knowing full well that their cunning is a lie and that they are sinning intentionally [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Building on this theme of hypocrisy, [המאירי] notes that these wrongdoers wrap themselves in a false piety, presenting themselves as righteous solely to deceive the world around them.

Another perspective shifts the focus from behavioral hypocrisy to intellectual error. In this view, the wrongdoers stray from God's laws because they rely too heavily on their own theories and investigations. They justify their departures from the truth through flawed human logic and deceitful reasoning [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To illustrate this, [האלשיך] points to the historical example of Korah and his faction. They dismissed God's laws based on their own personal reasoning and attempted to trick the Israelites into joining their rebellion. The ultimate lesson drawn from this is a clear warning against abandoning the word of God simply because it conflicts with human logic.
