תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק י״ד

Psalms 119:14Sefaria

בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ עֵדְוֺתֶ֥יךָ שַּׂ֗שְׂתִּי כְּעַ֣ל כׇּל־הֽוֹן׃

Finding immense wealth brings a natural, overwhelming sense of joy. In the spiritual realm, this same level of profound happiness is experienced when a person embraces God's commandments and deeply internalizes faith. Understanding the Torah brings a gladness that rivals the discovery of all the riches in the world.

The primary approach among commentators views this joy as the direct result of engaging with divine laws. This engagement is often understood as actively living out the commandments [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], or as the steady process of training the soul to naturally follow this spiritual direction [אבן עזרא]. As a person goes deeper into this lifestyle, they uncover profound wisdom and righteousness [רד״ק]. Ultimately, the happiness flows from achieving complete and perfect faith in these divine instructions [מאירי].

Looking deeper into the concept of a spiritual journey, a distinction is made between a narrow, private trail and a broad, main road. The broad road consists of the foundational stories and principles of the Torah, which bear witness to God's careful watch over the world, His power, and the reality of reward and punishment. The overwhelming joy experienced is the result of uncovering the precious treasure of faith within these teachings. A person gathers this faith into their soul with the same eagerness and delight as someone collecting vast amounts of physical treasure [מלבי״ם].

Taking a remarkably different, practical approach, this joy can also be understood in relation to financial spending. Certain days, specifically Sabbaths and holidays, serve as living witnesses to the creation of the world and the Exodus from Egypt. Naturally, human impulse might cause a person to worry or feel distressed about the heavy costs involved in celebrating these special times. Yet, the proper attitude is entirely the opposite. Following this lifestyle requires spending money, but it is done with immense gladness, feeling exactly as though one is receiving a great fortune. This joy is rooted in the clear understanding that money spent to honor Sabbaths and holidays never diminishes a person's wealth. Instead, it brings even greater abundance and blessing into their life [אלשיך].
