Just as a person might scan the horizon hoping for another human being to rescue them, the psalmist directs this intense gaze entirely toward God [רד"ק]. This physical reaction represents a natural progression in suffering. What begins as a hidden, internal yearning of the soul eventually becomes visible through the external exhaustion of the eyes [אבן עזרא].

The focus of this deep anticipation is God's spoken word. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to a specific divine promise, with the psalmist desperately hoping for the fulfillment of a pledge that has been delayed. Alternatively, this focus may be directed toward understanding or accepting a difficult decree issued by God [אבן עזרא]. Overwhelmed by the depth of his suffering and the sheer amount of time that has passed without relief, the psalmist cries out in distress. From a place of poverty and agony, he asks when God will finally bring comfort and end the painful waiting [רד"ק, מלבי"ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A unique historical approach places this experience during a specific, perilous moment in King David's life. In this scenario, David was waiting for a divine sign before engaging his enemies in battle, even as his soldiers faced immediate danger from drawn swords. David was entirely willing to sacrifice his own life rather than disobey God's command to wait. In this light, his plea for comfort is not a request to be rescued from physical death. Instead, he asks God how He will eventually comfort him for making the ultimate sacrifice, perhaps wondering if that comfort will come in the future through resurrection or the reincarnation of his soul [אלשיך].
