Psalms 119:83Sefaria

כִּֽי־הָ֭יִיתִי כְּנֹ֣אד בְּקִיט֑וֹר חֻ֝קֶּ֗יךָ לֹ֣א שָׁכָֽחְתִּי׃

A person enduring immense physical and emotional pain often finds it difficult to maintain focus and faith. Yet, profound devotion to God can persist even when suffering consumes one's physical strength. The primary approach among commentators views this state of deep distress through a vivid metaphor of a leather flask or wineskin exposed to smoke and heat [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When a leather bag is hung in a smoky environment, it gradually shrinks, blackens, and dries out. In the same way, the poet's own skin and body have become exhausted, withered, and frail due to the relentless troubles and pressures surrounding him from all sides [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Despite this agonizing deterioration, where he feels as though he is shrinking and cracking under the weight of his hardship, he remains steadfast in his commitment to God. There is a deep significance to his specific focus on divine laws that lack an obvious rational explanation. In the midst of his agony, the poet relies completely on God, accepting his painful circumstances with pure faith, even without understanding the reason for his suffering. This mirrors his exact approach to these specific laws, which he fulfills faithfully without needing to know their underlying logic [אלשיך].

Furthermore, the natural result of physical exhaustion, severe dehydration, and constant distress is a failing memory. It is especially easy to forget laws that do not carry a clear, logical reason to anchor them in the human mind. Therefore, the very fact that he manages to remember these specific commandments despite his harsh and distracting condition stands as a tremendous merit, one that makes him truly worthy of divine salvation [מלבי״ם].
