תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק כ״ד

Psalms 119:24Sefaria

גַּֽם־עֵ֭דֹתֶיךָ שַׁעֲשֻׁעָ֗י אַנְשֵׁ֥י עֲצָתִֽי׃ {פ}

The role of God's laws in a person's life extends far beyond mere religious obligation. Instead of a heavy burden, the Commandments serve as a constant source of joy and a personal guide through life's complexities. Engaging with these divine testimonies is not a casual or occasional activity. Rather, it becomes a person's central occupation [רש״י]. The primary approach among commentators is that God's laws provide profound pleasure and demand continuous involvement [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Through this deep connection, the Torah transforms into a personal counselor. It acts much like a trusted group of advisors [אבן עזרא], or simply stands as the ultimate counsel itself [מאירי]. When faced with decisions, a person constantly consults the Torah to determine the right path [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. These divine laws function as loyal friends and dependable guides, offering a stark contrast to flesh-and-blood officials [רד״ק]. In fact, such devotion leads to a state where one seeks no other advice outside of God's wisdom [מאירי].

The guidance provided by the Torah is both broad and deeply practical. On one level, studying these laws reveals how to draw God's personal providence into daily life, encouraging a person to always seek their counsel and act by their light [מלבי״ם]. On a moral level, this divine advice offers crucial direction during conflicts. For example, the Commandments served as the advisors that prevented King David from taking revenge and shedding the blood of those who pursued him. Through the Torah, he learned that his enemies, who had publicly shamed him, would face a punishment more severe than other sinners, including the loss of their share in the World to Come. Realizing that divine justice would be sufficient, he understood there was no need to harm them himself [אלשיך].
