This opposition does not consist of random remarks from ordinary people. Instead, it comes from high-ranking individuals who gather regularly with the specific intent to speak against him [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. Their words are entirely negative, forming a constant and unbroken stream of criticism [אבן עזרא, רד"ק, מלבי"ם].

Opinions differ regarding the exact identity of these important figures. The primary approach among commentators is that they are foreign kings and great leaders of the nations who have no desire for God's teachings [רש"י, רד"ק, מלבי"ם]. However, a contrasting view suggests that the criticism actually comes from within, identifying these leaders as the great sages of Israel and members of the high court sitting in session [אלשיך, מאירי].

The focus of their scorn varies based on these differing perspectives. Some explain that the leaders simply mock his dedication to study [רש"י], or ridicule him for observing laws that lack an obvious logical explanation [מלבי"ם].
