תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק פ״ט

Psalms 119:89Sefaria

לְעוֹלָ֥ם יְהֹוָ֑ה דְּ֝בָרְךָ֗ נִצָּ֥ב בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

Creation was not a single event that occurred at the beginning of time and then concluded. Instead, the universe is held together in this very moment by an active, living force. The primary approach among commentators is that unlike human speech, which fades the moment it is spoken, God's speech is eternal. The original utterance that brought the world into existence never actually stopped. It remains fixed in place, acting as the constant source of life for all of creation [אלשיך, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. If God were to withdraw His spoken word even for a moment, the entire universe would instantly lose its existence and collapse back into total chaos [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

This eternal nature of Divine speech is most clearly reflected in the heavens. The heavens were chosen to represent absolute eternity because the celestial systems remain constant and unchanging over time. This stands in sharp contrast to the earthly realm below, where individual creatures die and fade away, leaving only the broader species to survive through the passing generations [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, מאירי].

Beyond acting as a sustaining physical force, this ongoing Divine speech also represents God's active decrees and providence. His word stands firm and rules from high above [אבן עזרא]. Even when the natural arrangement of stars and constellations seems to dictate a specific destiny, whether good or bad, God's spoken will stands entirely above these celestial forces and can easily cancel their natural influence [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, recognizing this absolute control over the laws of nature—knowing that the world is kept standing by His word alone—is meant to fill humanity with a deep and lasting awe for their Creator [אלשיך].
