תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק ט״ז

Psalms 119:16Sefaria

בְּחֻקֹּתֶ֥יךָ אֶֽשְׁתַּעֲשָׁ֑ע לֹ֖א אֶשְׁכַּ֣ח דְּבָרֶֽךָ׃ {פ}

A person's relationship with God's commandments is not meant to be a heavy burden or an oppressive duty. Instead, it is meant to be a source of deep joy, constant engagement, and lasting memory. The primary approach among commentators is that this involves a continuous immersion and deep study [רש"י]. This ongoing engagement brings a sense of pleasure and joy [מצודת ציון]. Because the commandments are approached with delight, they become interesting and uplifting rather than weighing a person down [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

These specific laws represent the ways in which God guides His world [אבן עזרא]. Yet, they belong to a category of commandments whose logical reasons are hidden and beyond human understanding. This raises a natural question: how can someone truly rejoice in laws when their underlying purpose remains unknown? Commentators offer two complementary perspectives on this. On one hand, a person can find immense pleasure in fulfilling these laws just as if they fully understood their purpose, even knowing their own mind is too limited to grasp it [מאירי]. On the other hand, the joy actually comes from the realization that these laws hold profound, elevated secrets designed to bring the soul to perfection. Fulfilling them proves the soul is eternal and connected to God, creating a deep spiritual delight [מלבי"ם].

This sense of delight directly impacts a person's ability to remember God's word. Naturally, people tend to forget instructions that lack a clear, logical explanation. However, because these laws are held so dearly and bring such joy, they become permanently engraved in a person's memory and are never forgotten [מלבי"ם, מאירי]. In fact, the joyful and constant study of these laws is done specifically so they will not slip from the mind [מצודת דוד]. This active, happy engagement is what guarantees a person will always remember to walk in God's ways [אבן עזרא].
