תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק ל״ב

Psalms 119:32Sefaria

דֶּֽרֶךְ־מִצְוֺתֶ֥יךָ אָר֑וּץ כִּ֖י תַרְחִ֣יב לִבִּֽי׃ {פ}

The desire to serve God goes beyond simply performing technical actions; it involves a deep sense of momentum, joy, and inner freedom. Approaching the commandments with speed and eagerness shows an intense pursuit and a strong craving to fulfill His will [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This spiritual journey takes place on a broad highway, which represents the general and widely accessible elements of faith, good character, and interpersonal duties, contrasting with a narrow trail meant only for individuals. On this wide road, a person can move rapidly and confidently, even before mastering every fine detail of the commandments [מלבי״ם].

The motivation and ability to run eagerly along this spiritual road are closely tied to the concept of an expanded heart. Commentators offer different perspectives on what actually brings about this inner expansion. One approach is that it is a direct request for divine assistance. In this view, God provides the mental capacity, free time, and clarity needed to succeed [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. By removing life's obstacles and granting clear understanding, He allows a person to learn and observe the commandments with ease, avoiding the exhaustion that usually accompanies daily struggles [רד״ק, מאירי]. With this divine help, one can quickly grasp even the most complex and difficult spiritual topics without being delayed by confusion [אלשיך]. Alternatively, this expansion of the heart can be understood as a hope for future reward, trusting that God will eventually grant deep spiritual pleasures in the World to Come as a result of this eager devotion [מצודת דוד].

Another perspective shifts the focus from God's direct intervention to the nature of the road itself, suggesting that the path of the commandments is what actually expands the heart [אבן עזרא, מלבי ם באור המילות]. The human heart is the guiding force of a person, but it often finds itself trapped and under siege by internal enemies such as lust, anger, and jealousy. Walking faithfully along the path of the commandments liberates the heart from these emotional burdens. It creates a pure, wide inner space, allowing a person to conquer negative traits and achieve true emotional freedom [מלבי״ם].
