תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק צ״ז

Psalms 119:97Sefaria

מָה־אָהַ֥בְתִּי תוֹרָתֶ֑ךָ כׇּל־הַ֝יּ֗וֹם הִ֣יא שִׂיחָתִֽי׃

A deep emotional bond with spiritual study naturally transforms into a lifelong pursuit. When a person feels an overwhelming love for divine wisdom, it inevitably overflows into their daily life. This affection is not a passing feeling, but an immense, boundless passion [אלשיך, מאירי]. The primary approach among commentators is that there is a direct cause and effect at play: the sheer intensity of this love is exactly what causes the Torah to become the central focus of a person's daily engagement and conversation. Such deep excitement and dedication are the defining characteristics of true scholars [תורה תמימה].

The core of this devotion stems from the origin of the wisdom itself. A person loves the Torah specifically because it belongs to God. When study is pursued purely for His sake and out of love for the One who gave it, the knowledge becomes an eternal possession for the student [חומת אנך]. Through this constant engagement, a process of merging takes place. Initially, the wisdom belongs solely to God. However, by speaking about it continuously throughout the day, the Torah is absorbed into the individual until it becomes a part of their very identity, eventually becoming known as their own [אלשיך].

This relationship is highly unique. In most areas of life, constant habit and endless repetition slowly wear down a person's enthusiasm. Yet here, despite the relentless, non-stop focus, the passion remains enormous and never fades [אלשיך]. Furthermore, the nature of this ongoing speech extends beyond deliberate, structured study. It also encompasses casual, spontaneous, and unplanned talking. The devotion is so absolute that even when a person is simply making everyday conversation, their words effortlessly and naturally revolve around the Torah [מלבי״ם].
