Psalms 119:73Sefaria

Human existence is a journey toward spiritual completion, where physical creation is not an end in itself but a preparation for a much higher purpose: acquiring wisdom and living by the Torah. The primary approach among commentators is that God’s shaping of the human form involves the physical creation and the intricate perfection of the body's parts This preparation involves standing a person upright and readying them for life God designed the human body with unique, chosen features—an upright posture, a brain, a heart, and the organs of speech—specifically to enable the pursuit of wisdom [רד״ק]. From the very beginning, the physical body was fashioned as a vessel, equipped with the intellectual capacity to absorb understanding

Because God invested such profound effort into this intellectual preparation, a person naturally prays that this potential does not go to waste, asking for the necessary understanding to fulfill their purpose [מאירי]. This is a plea for God to look kindly upon His own handiwork and grant the intellect needed not only to learn the Commandments but to teach them to others [חומת אנך]. Essentially, this request seeks the culmination of the creation process itself, recognizing that a built physical body still requires spiritual completion [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, there is a genuine concern that human physicality might actually hold a person back from spiritual growth. Therefore, the prayer asks that just as God formed the physical matter, He should also prepare it properly, ensuring the body does not block the mind from receiving understanding from above [אלשיך].

On a deeper level, the physical structure of the human body is intricately linked to the Commandments themselves. The human form is composed of 248 limbs and 365 sinews, which correspond exactly to the Torah's 248 positive Commandments and 365 negative Commandments. By asking to learn these laws, a person seeks to actively sanctify every single limb and sinew of their body [אלשיך]. The Torah and the human structure are completely aligned and mirror each other. If a person can truly grasp how God built and established their body and soul in all their intricate details, they will consequently unlock the secrets of the Commandments, as the physical system of the body and the spiritual system of the Torah are perfectly parallel [מלבי״ם].
