The pursuit of a spiritual life holds a value that vastly outshines any material success. While most monarchs dedicate their reigns to amassing riches and expanding their estates, King David stands apart, declaring that his only true ambition is God's teachings [מאירי]. It is human nature to endure great hardship and labor endlessly just to build financial wealth. Recognizing this reality, it makes perfect sense that a person should be willing to accept difficulty and exert even greater effort to gain spiritual wisdom, which holds a much higher worth [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד].

The primary advantage of this spiritual wisdom over financial wealth is its eternal nature. At the end of a person's life, all accumulated silver and gold are left behind. The only true possessions that accompany a person into eternity are the Torah and good deeds gathered over a lifetime [תורה תמימה]. Furthermore, there is a unique intimacy in studying these teachings. Even when compared to a wealthy individual who generously gives away fortunes to charity, the one who studies achieves a deeper connection. While the person giving charity fulfills a divine command, the student engages directly with the very words spoken by God at Mount Sinai, an experience that includes every new insight a scholar discovers [אלשיך].

On a deeply personal level, this reality reflects the unique struggles of King David's own life. He lived through periods of intense sorrow and hardship, literally taking food from his own table to hoard vast amounts of gold and silver for the future construction of the Temple. In the end, God did not permit him to use those funds to build the structure. Yet, David harbors no regret over this outcome. He recognizes that the pain and deprivation he endured ultimately drove him to master God's laws and forge a closer relationship with Him. To David, this profound spiritual closeness is far better and more precious than all the massive wealth he had painstakingly saved and hidden away [אלשיך].
