תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק כ״ז

Psalms 119:27Sefaria

דֶּרֶךְ־פִּקּוּדֶ֥יךָ הֲבִינֵ֑נִי וְ֝אָשִׂ֗יחָה בְּנִפְלְאוֹתֶֽיךָ׃

A deep yearning exists within the human spirit to truly grasp the inner meaning of God's commands, moving beyond mere physical action to a profound comprehension that transforms the individual into a teacher and guide. The primary approach among commentators is that this desire is not about seeking basic instructions for how to perform a duty. Rather, it is a plea to uncover the very essence of the commandments, the reasons they were placed within the human heart, and the hidden secrets they carry [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד].

This idea deepens when distinguishing between the duties themselves and the divine path behind them. The basic purpose of the commandments is clear enough, serving as reminders of ancient miracles like the Exodus from Egypt. However, the path of these commandments, meaning the miraculous and wondrous way God operates in the world, lies far beyond ordinary human thought. The plea, therefore, is for God to grant the ability to comprehend this higher path and the secrets of His wonders [מלבי״ם].

Approaching such vast wisdom can be intimidating. There is a natural fear that the human mind simply cannot hold the massive secrets of the Torah. To avoid being blinded by their overwhelming magnitude, a person asks God to reveal these deep mysteries through the simple, everyday language of the commandments themselves [אלשיך]. From another angle, this quest focuses on the actual method of learning. True insight is only gained through hard work and effort. By asking to know the correct path of study and investigation, a person prepares themselves to engage with the wonders of the Torah right from the very beginning of their learning journey [מאירי].

When this level of understanding is finally reached, the natural result is to speak about and actively engage with these wonders [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This outward expression takes several forms. It can be a mission to spread wisdom, teaching others and sharing the hidden wonders that have been discovered [מצודת דוד]. On a deeper level, grasping the secrets of the commandments purifies both the body and the soul. This purification elevates the individual until they are capable of grasping and speaking about the highest celestial mysteries, which are compared to spiritual angels formed directly by the speech of God [אלשיך].
