תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק ס״ד

Psalms 119:64Sefaria

חַסְדְּךָ֣ יְ֭הֹוָה מָלְאָ֥ה הָאָ֗רֶץ חֻקֶּ֥יךָ לַמְּדֵֽנִי׃ {פ}

The entire world is sustained by an endless flow of Divine kindness. The primary approach among commentators is that all living creatures exist solely because of God's universal goodness, which He constantly pours out upon creation. However, from this broad awareness of global abundance emerges a deeply personal appeal. Of all the many forms of kindness a person could request, the ultimate desire is to be granted the spiritual gift of learning God's laws. The plea is for God to extend His grace to the individual, granting him a heart capable of truly grasping the Torah. Through this, a person does not merely benefit from the general kindness that sustains the physical world, but also achieves a profound understanding of God's ways.

While this view sees kindness as a general blessing upon creation, another perspective links this abundance directly to human actions. The earth overflows with Divine kindness because it is filled with devoted and righteous individuals. Recognizing the merit of these people, the request shifts toward uncovering the hidden reasons behind God's more mysterious laws [מלבי״ם]. This desire for understanding is driven by a deep yearning to connect with those righteous individuals who populate the earth. The logical, easily understood parts of the Torah allow for a natural bond with these people, but the unexplainable laws create a gap in shared understanding. Therefore, the plea to learn these specific laws is a quest to bridge that divide, aiming for a complete and essential unity with the righteous across every level of the Torah [אלשיך].
