תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק פ״ו

Psalms 119:86Sefaria

כׇּל־מִצְוֺתֶ֥יךָ אֱמוּנָ֑ה שֶׁ֖קֶר רְדָפ֣וּנִי עׇזְרֵֽנִי׃

A sharp contrast exists between the absolute truth of God's ways and the deceitful cruelty of human persecution. Caught in this painful gap, a victim of injustice cries out to God for rescue.

God's guidance of the world and His Commandments are built entirely on justice, honesty, and the protection of the weak [רד"ק, מאירי]. Their ultimate goal is to guide humanity to live with integrity and truth [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. On a personal level, this truth requires absolute loyalty to God's instructions [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This loyalty means fulfilling the Commandments with simple, wholehearted belief, rather than relying on philosophical investigations or intellectual reasoning [מלבי"ם]. Additionally, this faithfulness extends to the oral tradition passed down through generations. The written word alone is not enough; it relies on an unbroken chain of received wisdom. For example, it is this very tradition that established the legal distinction between males and females regarding the prohibition against marrying into the nations of Ammon and Moab. This specific ruling is what validated King David's lineage, as he descended from Ruth the Moabite [רש"י, אלשיך].

Standing in direct opposition to this divine truth are enemies who engage in baseless, deceitful persecution. The primary approach among commentators is that this hostility is the exact opposite of the truth found in God's ways. This falsehood takes several forms. Sometimes, the attackers hide behind a mask of righteousness. They claim they are punishing the victim for his sins and rooting out evil for a holy cause, yet their true intentions are entirely dishonest [מצודת דוד]. In other cases, the enemies mock the victim's simple belief. They overthink and philosophize about the Commandments, targeting the victim specifically because of his pure, unquestioning devotion [מלבי"ם]. Furthermore, the deceit manifests as personal slander. Enemies spread false plots, such as attempts to disqualify King David's royal lineage because of his Moabite roots [רש"י], or they invent false accusations regarding the events involving Bathsheba [אלשיך].

Out of this deep distress comes a plea for divine help. Because God's instructions are rooted in supreme justice and the defense of the oppressed, the victim turns to Him for salvation. He asks to be saved from those who hunt him without cause, hoping to overcome his attackers and finally be delivered from their web of lies [רד"ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד].
