תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק קמ״ט

Psalms 119:149Sefaria

ק֭וֹלִי שִׁמְעָ֣ה כְחַסְדֶּ֑ךָ יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה כְּֽמִשְׁפָּטֶ֥ךָ חַיֵּֽנִי׃

A person in distress often turns to God with a dual plea: a request to be heard and a request for survival. This desperate cry relies entirely on the infinite kindness of the Creator and the consistent ways He guides His world.

When asking God to listen with kindness, the primary approach among commentators is that this appeal is built on past experience. The petitioner asks God to listen to his prayer just as He has shown kindness and acted favorably toward him many times before [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי]. However, another perspective suggests that the very act of listening is itself the greatest kindness. The reality that God Himself pays direct attention to the prayers of a small human being, without requiring an intermediary angel, is a wondrous expression of divine kindness [אלשיך].

Following the request to be heard is a plea for life based on God's judgment. The primary approach among commentators is that this does not refer to harsh, strict justice. Instead, it refers to God's established customs. The request for life relies on the consistent, good ways through which God naturally extends kindness to His devoted followers [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מאירי].

A deeper perspective offers two unique ways to understand this plea for life [אלשיך]. First, it is a request that God sustain the person through a form of justice that is softened by mercy, a trait associated with the specific divine name used in this prayer, rather than judging him with absolute severity. Second, it is a profound request for spiritual capacity. Just as God gives wicked individuals supernatural strength and vitality so they can endure the painful consequences of their judgment, the petitioner asks God to grant him the vitality and strength to endure the overwhelming, fire-like intensity of being deeply connected to Him. With this strength, the person can fully receive the ultimate good.
