תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק מ״ח

Psalms 119:48Sefaria

וְאֶשָּֽׂא־כַפַּ֗י אֶֽל־מִ֭צְוֺתֶיךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָהָ֗בְתִּי וְאָשִׂ֥יחָה בְחֻקֶּֽיךָ׃ {פ}

A deep longing, respect, and love for God's teachings often manifest through a seamless blend of physical action, pure inner emotion, and constant study. The physical act of raising one's hands represents a proactive approach to faith. The primary approach among commentators is that this gesture symbolizes active doing; a person lifts their hands to grasp the Commandments and bring them into actual practice. At the same time, this motion serves as a profound expression of respect, showing a readiness to accept these divine instructions with deep love [אבן עזרא].

Beyond a simple physical action, reaching upward can represent directing personal pleas and wishes toward the Commandments themselves, reflecting a deep desire to gain and receive even more from them [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In a practical sense, it can also symbolize a financial commitment, demonstrating a person's willingness to spend their own money to acquire and beautifully fulfill these duties [חומת אנך]. On a deeply spiritual level, raising one's hands is likened to standing before higher powers. The good deeds a person performs transform into spiritual entities that accompany them through life. A person lifts their hands to these spiritual forces, asking for their help and protection, much like one would stand respectfully before great leaders and kings [אלשיך].

This dedication is driven by a pure inner connection. Fulfilling these divine duties is done entirely out of love, rather than out of any expectation for a reward [מלבי״ם]. However, true devotion must move from physical action to active speech and study. After performing a good deed, a person must train their mouth to speak words of Torah, study them constantly, and delve deeply into the oral traditions to understand exactly how to practice the laws correctly [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, חומת אנך].

This progression creates a complete picture of spiritual service, highlighting a meaningful distinction between logical duties and unexplained decrees. While a person naturally approaches logical Commandments with love because their reasons are easily understood by the human mind, true dedication is shown by also carefully studying and discussing the divine Statutes, even though their underlying reasons remain completely hidden and unknown [מלבי״ם].
