תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק קל״ה

Psalms 119:135Sefaria

פָּ֭נֶיךָ הָאֵ֣ר בְּעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וְ֝לַמְּדֵ֗נִי אֶת־חֻקֶּֽיךָ׃

A plea for God to shine His face upon a person expresses a deep longing for spiritual closeness, favor, and wisdom. The primary approach among commentators is that a bright expression serves as a metaphor for grace, goodwill, and affection. This imagery is borrowed from everyday human relationships, where a smiling face signals a joyful welcome. It is much like a king whose bright expression brings life and kindness, whereas his anger brings destruction.

Beyond a simple display of favor, this divine light is not merely directed at a person from the outside. Instead, the revelation of the Divine Presence penetrates deep into a person's inner mind and soul [מלבי״ם]. This inner illumination specifically targets the heart, which stands directly before God. When His light shines within a person's heart, it cleanses and purifies it from impurity. This purification naturally prevents the heart and the eyes from acting as agents of sin [אלשיך].

Achieving this inner purity and mental clarity is an essential preparation for learning God's laws. By their very nature, divine laws are hidden, wondrous, and difficult to grasp. A person can only truly understand them by receiving the extra wisdom that flows from the light of God's face and His holy spirit [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Furthermore, there is a natural connection between a shining face and the process of learning. Just as seeing a teacher's face sharpens a student's mind, looking upon God's shining face allows a person to learn and understand His laws with exceptional sharpness and profound depth [חומת אנך].
