תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק ס״ו

Psalms 119:66Sefaria

ט֤וּב טַ֣עַם וָדַ֣עַת לַמְּדֵ֑נִי כִּ֖י בְמִצְוֺתֶ֣יךָ הֶאֱמָֽנְתִּי׃

After thanking God for the kindness He has already shown, the focus shifts to a plea for a specific spiritual gift regarding the study of Torah [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The psalmist asks for the ability to perceive the inner reasons, profound depth, and delight hidden within God's Commandments, alongside the intellectual capacity required to fully absorb and understand them [אלשיך]. Taking a different approach, [מלבי״ם] connects this plea to the surrounding context, explaining that asking for this deep understanding serves as a guide to prevent a person from sinning by mistake.

The relationship between faith and intellectual comprehension forms the foundation of this request. The primary approach among commentators is that the psalmist's faith does not rely on understanding the reasons behind the Commandments. Rather, his faith comes first. He already possesses a complete and unwavering belief that God issued these directives and that they are entirely just [רד״ק]. In fact, the plea expresses that even though he has already believed in and fulfilled the Commandments without knowing their underlying logic, he still deeply yearns to comprehend God's ways [מאירי].

This profound faith is exactly what awakens a thirst to discover the deeper meaning behind the Commandments [מצודת דוד]. If someone were to seek the reasons behind the Commandments merely as a prerequisite to believing in them, it is highly likely that their request would go unanswered. However, because the psalmist's faith is already firmly established and unconditional, he becomes worthy to ask God for this knowledge and to have the inner reasons of the Commandments revealed to him [אלשיך].
