תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק א׳

Psalms 119:1Sefaria

אַשְׁרֵ֥י תְמִֽימֵי־דָ֑רֶךְ הַ֝הֹלְכִ֗ים בְּתוֹרַ֥ת יְהֹוָֽה׃

A deep yearning for closeness to God and devotion to His commandments forms the foundation of a truly spiritual life. This profound desire involves directing all human energy toward serving the Creator and remaining steadfast, even when hardships and distractions threaten to pull a person away from what truly matters [רד״ק, מאירי]. A soul overflowing with this passion naturally seeks to praise God in every conceivable way, expressing its devotion through a rich variety of terms for His teachings [מאירי].

The primary approach among commentators is that the highest praise belongs to those who walk a complete, correct, and flawless journey through life by following God's teachings [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. This perfection is understood in several distinct ways. Some highlight the sharp contrast between human philosophy and the divine path. While paths built on human intellect often bend and change to serve personal interests, true perfection is achieved only when a person acts exclusively for God, free from any hidden motives. Only then does a person's journey become permanent, stable, and unshakable [מלבי״ם].

Others view this perfection through the lens of continuous learning, noting that a life journey cannot be considered complete without the study of God's teachings [רד״ק]. From this perspective, the ultimate praise is directed at those whose primary focus is learning while carefully avoiding sin. These individuals view the physical world simply as a temporary passageway, gathering wisdom that they will carry with them into the world to come [אלשיך].

A further approach bridges the gap between study and daily action. Those who are truly whole in their journey do not settle for theoretical learning; they reflect on God's teachings even as they go about their daily routines. They actively search for opportunities to fulfill commandments and bring joy to the Creator [חומת אנך]. Their conduct is defined by humility [מאירי], and they consistently strive to go beyond the strict requirements of the law, doing more than what is merely obligated [רד״ק].

Ultimately, walking in the teachings of God is a unified experience that embraces every branch of spiritual life [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. These teachings provide the complete framework necessary for human perfection [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, מאירי]. This structure includes the general system of beliefs and actions, as well as the specific path of refining one's character to mirror God's traits. It encompasses logical laws governing human relationships, alongside statutes whose deeper reasons remain hidden from human understanding. Furthermore, it contains testimonies—actions and historical accounts that bear witness to the creation of the world and God's guiding hand—and inner precepts, which are the logical truths and beliefs securely deposited within the human heart.
