A life of spiritual integrity requires more than just walking a straight path; it demands a deep commitment to preserving tradition and seeking God with absolute devotion [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators views this commitment as the basic observance of God's Commandments [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. Yet, this observance can reach a much higher level of constant vigilance. At this elevated state, a person remains perpetually aware, never allowing their mind to wander from their spiritual duties [אלשיך]. It becomes a profound mental exercise, where the Commandments are constantly held in one's thoughts in order to truly understand and absorb them [רד״ק].

The traditions being guarded are specifically those that serve as testimonies to God's creation of the world, such as the Sabbath and the festivals [מצודת ציון]. They also include the ancient stories and traditions passed down through the generations, which bear witness to both the world's creation and God's ongoing involvement in human affairs [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

There is a powerful link between holding fast to these ancient testimonies and the ability to truly seek God. Often, intellectual inquiry is clouded by doubt. However, those who preserve these traditions out of deep inner faith can approach their spiritual investigations with absolute confidence [מלבי״ם, מאירי]. Because their foundation is secure, they can explore the truth and meaning of their faith without any hesitation [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

This pursuit of God is done with a complete and unified heart. It is entirely free from hidden motives, such as the desire for wealth or honor [רד״ק, אלשיך]. Instead, it involves channeling every aspect of the human soul, including even the negative inclinations, toward serving God [אלשיך]. Grounded in this perfect faith, a person can stand in prayer with complete sincerity, fully trusting in His power to change the very laws of nature and overturn harsh decrees [מאירי].
