תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק קי״א

Psalms 119:111Sefaria

נָחַ֣לְתִּי עֵדְוֺתֶ֣יךָ לְעוֹלָ֑ם כִּֽי־שְׂשׂ֖וֹן לִבִּ֣י הֵֽמָּה׃

A deep, personal connection to God's word transforms spiritual duties from external obligations into a joyful, lifelong heritage. Rather than viewing divine laws and stories as a burden, a person can embrace them as a treasured possession that constantly guides their life. Taking ownership of this spiritual path is like acquiring a permanent estate [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that this represents an eternal grasp on the Torah. A person clings to God's instructions just as one fiercely protects an ancient family inheritance, refusing to abandon it even for a single moment [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Through this unwavering dedication, these teachings become a permanent fixture within the soul [מלבי״ם].

The exact nature of this treasured legacy is viewed in different ways. One perspective suggests it centers on historical accounts. These are the stories and wonders God performed in the past, which serve as lasting proof of His fairness, compassion, and guiding hand. Although these events were passed down by ancestors, studying them allows a person to experience and celebrate them as if they had been an actual eyewitness [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. Another view suggests that the legacy specifically refers to the strict Commandments, such as the observance of the Sabbath [אלשיך].

The eternal nature of this connection is directly fueled by joy. The commitment to this spiritual inheritance lasts forever precisely because following God's path brings true happiness to the heart [רד״ק]. When a person studies and fulfills the Commandments out of love and joy, it ensures that they will never forget what they have learned [חומת אנך]. Moreover, experiencing this profound joy in the present world serves as living proof that God's teachings will remain a person's cherished heritage in the World to Come as well [אלשיך].
