תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק קנ״ב

Psalms 119:152Sefaria

קֶ֣דֶם יָ֭דַעְתִּי מֵעֵדֹתֶ֑יךָ כִּ֖י לְעוֹלָ֣ם יְסַדְתָּֽם׃ {פ}

God's laws are not merely a collection of temporary rules, but the eternal bedrock upon which all reality is built. Recognizing this truth provides a deep sense of security and stability, seamlessly bridging a person's past, present, and future. The primary approach among commentators is that this foundational awareness is rooted in ancient times, stretching back to the earliest generations [שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם, מאירי]. Yet, this establishment of truth can also be viewed as preceding events conceptually or historically. For instance, the knowledge of certain Commandments was granted long before they could actually be performed, such as the laws dependent on the land of Israel being taught before the people even entered it [רש״י]. On a more personal level of protection, it means knowing God's truth and relying on His support long before wicked people or their schemes ever draw near [אבן עזרא]. Taking this concept to its absolute limit, the Torah and the concept of repentance were created before the universe itself even existed [אלשיך]. From the perspective of the individual learner, this represents the very first, fundamental realization a person achieves when beginning to study [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

The enduring stability of God's laws stems from their roots in absolute truth, perfection, justice, and honesty. Because true justice is an absolute value, these testimonies are completely flawless and unchanging; they will never be canceled, and a person can always draw close to them [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי, אבן עזרא, שטיינזלץ]. Beyond serving as a moral guide, they act as the actual foundation that sustains the entire world. Through studying them, a person learns how to repair the world and ultimately elevates their mind to grasp divine wisdom [רד״ק]. In fact, the Commandments and those who choose to repent form the very infrastructure upon which the universe stands [אלשיך]. This eternal nature also reveals a profound truth about continuous divine providence. Just as God watched over the earliest generations and remained close to them, He has established His care forever and never withdraws from reality [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the framework He set in place is so entirely comprehensive that it holds within it the blueprint for all future events, reaching until the end of all generations [רש״י].
