תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק נ״ז

Psalms 119:57Sefaria

חֶלְקִ֖י יְהֹוָ֥ה אָמַ֗רְתִּי לִשְׁמֹ֥ר דְּבָרֶֽיךָ׃

Every person faces a fundamental choice regarding where to invest their life's energy and what to make their ultimate pursuit. While many people chase wealth, property, and worldly pleasures as their inheritance, a true seeker of faith chooses to tie their fate exclusively to God, making Him their sole desire [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Consequently, any involvement in material matters becomes a matter of strict necessity, allowing the primary focus to remain entirely on clinging to God [מאירי].

Declaring God as one's portion is not merely a private, internal thought, but a public proclamation directed at the wider world. By openly sharing this deep trust and faith, the goal is to inspire listeners, with the hope that they too will be moved to walk the same spiritual path [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד].

The desire to keep God's commands reflects a pure, unconditional spiritual service. It is a commitment to serve God without any expectation of reward, even in the afterlife. The very act of observing the commandments is itself the ultimate reward and inheritance. It stems from the humble recognition that a person owns nothing and simply seeks God's closeness as a free gift [חומת אנך]. Alternatively, this commitment can be understood as a direct plea. It is a request for God to fulfill His own promises to the individual, based on the foundational trust that God is their chosen portion [רש״י].

On a deeper level, this devotion highlights a profound internal struggle against negative inclinations. According to the laws of nature, a fragment always yearns to reunite with the whole from which it was taken. Naturally, the human soul should possess an overwhelming desire to return to God. In reality, however, people face intense internal resistance, and it often seems that God desires a relationship with humanity more than humans long for Him. To overcome the inner barriers that block this connection, reminding oneself that God is their portion serves as a powerful tool. It brings to mind God's deep love and desire for the individual, providing the necessary strength to faithfully observe the Torah and its commandments [אלשיך].
