Psalms 119:45Sefaria

Dedicating oneself to the study of God's laws is often perceived as a limiting endeavor bound by strict rules. However, true devotion to exploring these commandments actually brings a profound sense of freedom, security, and open space, liberating a person from spiritual and mental confinement. The act of deeply engaging with God's word can be understood as an active search and request [רש״י], or as the careful process of explaining and clarifying the law [אבן עזרא]. Ultimately, this deep engagement results in a life akin to walking through a wide, open place, completely free from distress

The primary approach among commentators is that this open space represents legal and intellectual clarity. Navigating the laws of the Torah becomes like walking on a broad, secure road where one is unlikely to stumble [מצודת דוד]. When a person deeply investigates the reasons behind the commandments and applies proper principles to legal discussions, they arrive at the true, clear, and spacious path of the law. This stands in sharp contrast to those who fail to aim for the truth, finding themselves stuck on paths that are narrow, tight, and full of confusion

This sense of expansiveness also exists on a purely intellectual level. The Torah itself is compared to a vast expanse, wider than the sea. By actively seeking out the meaning of the commandments, a person escapes the pressure and narrowness of philosophical doubt, stepping out into the open space of clear knowledge and complete truth [מאירי, אלשיך].

Beyond personal intellectual achievement, this wide space is the direct result of divine assistance. Because the individual constantly seeks God's commandments, there is a deep trust that God will light up his eyes, support his study, and ensure his steps are never restricted The commandments themselves act as a higher power, and focusing on them draws God's help in grasping the truth [אלשיך]. Furthermore, because the commandments remind a person of God's kindness and wonders, the reward for seeking them is that God performs kindness and wonders in return, granting the individual a life of true expansiveness [מלבי״ם].

On a more hidden and spiritual level, this concept of walking freely hints at a heavenly journey. Through constant involvement with words of truth and the deep study of the Torah, a person earns the ultimate reward of walking and strolling through the vast expanses of the Garden of Eden, accompanied by the Divine Presence [אלשיך].
