Faced with malicious falsehoods, a person must choose between yielding to doubt or doubling down on their devotion to God. The wicked actively work against the believer, and the primary approach among commentators is that these individuals fabricate and smear lies onto him [רש״י, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests that they band together, forming a united front to attack him without any justification [מאירי].

These attacks take two distinct forms. On a personal level, the falsehoods manifest as baseless accusations about actions he never committed [אבן עזרא]. The attackers also level harsh claims of hypocrisy, arguing that his good deeds are merely for show and that his inner character does not match his outward piety [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. On a spiritual level, the attacks are entirely ideological. The wicked spread fabrications in an attempt to deny the Torah [מלבי״ם]. They mock the believer for observing laws that lack obvious logical explanations, hoping to plant seeds of doubt in his mind [אלשיך], or they simply harass him to disrupt his service to God [מאירי].

In the face of this relentless pressure, the believer's response is firm and unwavering. He actively ignores their taunts [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and refuses to let his natural inclinations give in to their doubts [אלשיך, מאירי]. Directly addressing the accusations of hypocrisy, he ensures that his inner thoughts perfectly align with his outward actions, observing the commandments with absolute truth and a whole heart [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, there is a specific focus on keeping those commandments that serve as reminders of the miracles God performed in the past. Observing these specific laws acts as a living, undeniable testimony. By practicing them, the believer actively disproves the ideological lies spread by the wicked, standing as a physical witness to God's truth [מלבי״ם].
