תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק ק״כ

Psalms 119:120Sefaria

סָמַ֣ר מִפַּחְדְּךָ֣ בְשָׂרִ֑י וּֽמִמִּשְׁפָּטֶ֥יךָ יָרֵֽאתִי׃ {פ}

Reflecting on divine justice and the way God governs the world can evoke a profound sense of terror. Unlike those who act wickedly under the false assumption that God is blind to their deeds, a person of faith recognizes that He sees everything, filling them with a deep, reverent fear [רד״ק]. When recalling the punishments God has brought upon wrongdoers, this dread intensifies, serving as a powerful deterrent against breaking His commandments [אבן עזרא, מאירי].

The reaction to this realization is intensely physical. It is an overwhelming anxiety that causes the hair on one's body to stand on end [רש״י, שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. The terror is so absolute that the flesh itself seems to harden and become rigid like a nail [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד], creating a sensation as though the skin is physically detaching from the body [מאירי].

Alongside this physical reaction is a deep dread of God's decrees and the ultimate accounting where one will be judged for their actions [רש״י, רד״ק]. Yet, this fear is never paralyzing. Instead, it acts as a driving force, motivating a person to carefully avoid sin and cultivate a genuine love for the teachings of the Torah [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

Commentators note subtle distinctions in the nature of this fear. On one hand, there is a primal, instinctive dread of unknown pain or danger, which triggers the severe physical response in the body. On the other hand, there is a more intellectual, conscious awe directed at God's clear and known laws [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective views this duality through the lens of punishment: the physical reaction represents the fear of bodily suffering in this current world, while the broader dread reflects the soul's deep anxiety over the spiritual judgment and consequences that await in the world to come [אלשיך].
