תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 119:12Sefaria

בָּר֖וּךְ אַתָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֗ה לַמְּדֵ֥נִי חֻקֶּֽיךָ׃

A brief, heartfelt prayer bridges the act of praising God with a deep desire to learn His commandments [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The relationship between offering a blessing to God and asking Him for instruction can be understood in a few distinct ways. One perspective views the opening praise as an expression of gratitude for the past. By thanking God for the guidance He has already provided, the individual builds a foundation to ask for continued learning [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, the act of blessing God can be seen as a basis for a spiritual reward. By recognizing God's greatness, the individual asks that the reward for this devotion be the privilege of learning His laws [אבן עזרא]. Another approach connects this plea directly to the daily prayers and blessings over the Torah. Since people bless God daily for teaching His laws to the Israelites and ask Him for understanding, this is a request for God to fulfill those very prayers in reality. If God does not actively teach His laws, those daily blessings would remain unfulfilled [אלשיך].

The plea for instruction is not a simple request to learn the practical rules of the commandments, as the individual is already committed to observing them. Instead, it is a pursuit of a much deeper understanding of their inner meaning and hidden secrets [מלבי״ם]. The focus is specifically on the type of laws that defy basic human logic. The individual fully acknowledges that God is perfect and that every command stems from absolute wisdom, leaving no room for doubt. Yet, there is a strong yearning for God to grant the heart enough insight to grasp the hidden reasons behind these challenging laws [מאירי, מצודת דוד].

Seeking the reasons behind these laws is not merely an intellectual exercise; it is meant to elevate the actual practice of the commandments. Just as someone enjoying a physical pleasure must know what they are blessing to truly appreciate the experience, there is a profound joy for the soul in performing a commandment. Understanding the deeper reasons allows a person to know exactly what they are blessing, helping them focus on the pure, inner goodness of the act [אלשיך].
