A deep commitment to following God's laws naturally brings about a realization of human limits and the constant need for divine support. Recognizing the justice and wisdom in God's logical rules inspires a person to observe His more mysterious commandments. Even when the reasons behind certain laws are difficult to grasp, one follows them with the deep trust that they too hold a hidden, supreme wisdom [מלבי״ם, מאירי].

The primary approach among commentators is that the commitment to keep these laws is absolute, carried out with all of one's heart and strength. It is an effort to observe them so perfectly that it feels as though human reason itself demands them. Relying on this pure intention, the individual asks God to remove any obstacles and never abandon him [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, מאירי]. However, another perspective suggests that this intense plea reflects a fear of total abandonment. It is an earnest request that God not leave the person completely, recognizing that without His constant help, continued observance is impossible [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this request is simply a prayer for God's presence to remain forever [אבן עזרא בשם בן בלעם].

The plea for God not to leave operates on several layers of spiritual development. It serves as a prayer for continuous divine assistance until one successfully reaches the highest level of observing the commandments [רד״ק בשם אביו]. Building on this, it is a request that God should not withhold His support until the person achieves spiritual greatness. Instead, God's help is needed right at the beginning of the journey, even when the individual is only able to observe a small amount [אלשיך]. On a deeper level, asking not to be abandoned is a prayer for divine inspiration and the perfection of the soul. The ultimate goal is to reach a state of spiritual elevation where one can finally understand the hidden reasons behind the very laws that once seemed so mysterious [מאירי, מלבי״ם].
