תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק קמ״ג

Psalms 119:143Sefaria

צַר־וּמָצ֥וֹק מְצָא֑וּנִי מִ֝צְוֺתֶ֗יךָ שַׁעֲשֻׁעָֽי׃

Even in the darkest moments of life, when a person is surrounded by suffering, a deep connection with God and active spiritual engagement serve as a powerful source of comfort and hope. Life is often marked by general periods of trouble, pain, and distress [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. However, commentators explore the distinct layers of these difficult experiences. One approach distinguishes between external hardships that strike from the outside and the internal, heavy sadness that weighs on a person's mind [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective focuses on the root cause of the suffering, contrasting the deliberate harm caused by a human enemy acting out of free will with the natural, circumstantial hardships of life, such as poverty or daily survival [אלשיך]. An additional view notes that the human impulse to do wrong often exploits moments of deep crisis, using the vulnerability of the situation to tempt a person into anger and sin [אלשיך].

Despite these overwhelming burdens, a person of faith does not abandon the path of the Torah during a crisis. Instead, they hold on even tighter, continuing to cling to it and finding genuine joy [מצודת דוד]. Active engagement in God's Commandments acts as a sturdy pillar of support, soothing a troubled heart and driving away inner sadness [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

A unique perspective suggests that this comfort is actually found by fulfilling the specific Commandments that apply directly to times of hardship. For instance, there is an obligation to bless God for the bad times with the same love as one blesses Him for the good times. The very act of carrying out these challenging duties with full acceptance and faith is exactly what brings a person true joy and comfort from within the pain itself [אלשיך].
