תהלים, פרק קי״ט, פסוק קס״ז

Psalms 119:167Sefaria

שָֽׁמְרָ֣ה נַ֭פְשִׁי עֵדֹתֶ֑יךָ וָאֹהֲבֵ֥ם מְאֹֽד׃

A deep, genuine connection to the laws of the Torah goes far beyond simply going through the motions of physical actions. True devotion requires an internal journey, one that blends careful thought, deep affection, and a rare harmony between the physical body and the spiritual soul. The core principles of faith [המאירי], along with the historical accounts in the Torah, serve as powerful witnesses to God's careful guidance of the world, as well as the realities of reward and consequence [מלבי״ם]. Guarding these truths begins deep within. When a person takes the time to mentally and spiritually reflect on these concepts, a profound love naturally begins to grow [רד״ק]. This intense affection proves that the individual is fulfilling the commandments out of pure love for God, rather than being driven by a fear of punishment [מצודת דוד].

This state represents an extraordinary level of human perfection. In most cases, a person experiences an internal struggle where the spiritual soul deeply desires to follow God's path, while the material body resists. In this elevated state, however, the soul eagerly longs for God's truths, and its passion is so strong that the entire person, including every physical and spiritual part, loves them completely [אלשיך].

Yet, this deep internal love and understanding are not meant to remain hidden in the heart. They serve as the essential foundation for practical, everyday actions. Specific physical commandments, such as observing the Sabbath and the festivals, act as tangible reminders of these spiritual truths. They point back to the creation of the world and God's wonders, constantly reinforcing the awareness that every person lives and acts under His direct, personal care [מלבי״ם].
