דניאל, פרק י״א, פסוק י״ב

Daniel 11:12Sefaria

וְנִשָּׂ֥א הֶהָמ֖וֹן (ירום) [וְרָ֣ם] לְבָב֑וֹ וְהִפִּ֥יל רִבֹּא֖וֹת וְלֹ֥א יָעֽוֹז׃

Massive military success often carries a hidden danger, as a sudden triumph can easily lead to destructive complacency and an eventual downfall. The primary approach among commentators views this dynamic through a temporary victory achieved by the King of the South over the King of the North. In a sweeping success, the King of the South captures a massive multitude of enemy soldiers as prisoners of war [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, this overwhelming triumph quickly becomes his undoing. Filled with immense pride and a false sense of absolute victory [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, יוסף אבן יחיא], he abandons the military campaign. Instead of relentlessly pursuing his enemy to ensure their complete destruction, he retreats into a life of luxury and comfort [מלבי״ם].

Because of this arrogant complacency, his success is remarkably short-lived. Even though he manages to strike down tens of thousands of enemy troops, he ultimately fails to secure his power or win the broader conflict. His failure to finish the war allows the King of the North to eventually recover, rise again, and overpower him [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, יוסף אבן יחיא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Offering a different perspective, an alternative interpretation shifts the focus entirely to the King of the North [רש״י]. According to this view, it is the northern army that swells with pride as they scheme to dominate the war. They successfully strike down countless soldiers from the southern army. Yet, much like the other scenario, their battlefield advantage does not last, and they are ultimately denied the final victory.
