Genesis 31:41Sefaria

Summarizing two decades of grueling labor, Jacob confronts his father-in-law, laying bare the stark contrast between his own unwavering dedication and the relentless exploitation he endured. In a precise accounting of his time, he exposes a long history of deceit. Earlier in the confrontation, Jacob described the past twenty years from his father-in-law's perspective, highlighting the loyalty he offered and the wealth he generated. Now, he shifts to his own vantage point, emphasizing the suffering and mistreatment he received in return [שד״ל, כלי יקר].

Although Jacob spent only a single month physically living under Laban's roof, passing the rest of his time out in the fields as a shepherd, Laban's cruelty was so intense that this brief period of shared living felt as agonizingly long as twenty full years [כלי יקר]. In claiming these two decades of hardship as his own, Jacob firmly deflects any lingering accusations. Laban, whose own nature was steeped in dishonesty, naturally viewed others through a lens of suspicion. Jacob clarifies that he never received any unearned kindness or free benefits during his stay; rather, he paid for absolutely everything through exhaustive labor [העמק דבר, מלבי״ם].

Reflecting on his first fourteen years of service, it is noted that working as a common laborer to earn a bride was an extreme departure from accepted social norms [רד״ק]. Yet, this period highlights Jacob's profound integrity. Even after being deceived into marrying Leah and being coerced into another seven years of labor, an act bordering on outright theft, Jacob fulfilled his obligations with absolute faithfulness [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

Following this, Jacob spent six years tending the flocks. This duration mirrors the standard term of service for a Hebrew slave [חזקוני]. Having completed this full cycle, Jacob was a free man with every right to go his own way, rendering the complaints about his sudden departure completely baseless [ביאור יש״ר].

During those final six years, the conditions of his employment were manipulated constantly. Rather than substituting his payment with different goods, Laban repeatedly rewrote the actual terms of the contract, arbitrarily shifting the agreement from one specific pattern of sheep to another [רש״י, מזרחי, ברכת אשר]. This occurred exactly ten times. During the first year of shepherding, the original agreement was honored. However, over the subsequent five years, since the flocks gave birth twice annually, Laban seized every single birthing season as an opportunity to alter the deal, resulting in ten distinct breaches of trust [רבנו בחיי].

Despite enduring such a prolonged campaign of abuse, Jacob maintained remarkable nobility of character. Even in the heat of his anger, he chose to summarize the extensive fraud in just a few brief words. He deliberately held back from detailing the full extent of the sins committed against him out of basic respect, ensuring he did not publicly humiliate his father-in-law in front of the daughters and relatives gathered there [ביאור יש״ר].
