וַיִּגַּשׁ֙ צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ בֶֽן־כְּנַעֲנָ֔ה וַיַּכֶּ֥ה אֶת־מִיכָ֖יְהוּ עַל־הַלֶּ֑חִי וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אֵי־זֶ֨ה עָבַ֧ר רֽוּחַ־יְהֹוָ֛ה מֵאִתִּ֖י לְדַבֵּ֥ר אוֹתָֽךְ׃

The confrontation between the royal court's prophets and the lone prophet of truth reaches a physical and verbal climax. Zedekiah son of Chenaanah, acting as the head of the prophets, views himself as the central channel through which all prophecy flows to others [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Stepping forward, he strikes Micaiah directly on the cheek, specifically targeting the area near the eye [מצודת ציון]. This physical blow is a calculated move designed to publicly insult and humiliate him [אברבנאל].

Following the strike, Zedekiah issues a sharp challenge, demanding to know which way the spirit passed from him to speak to Micaiah. The primary approach among commentators is that this question is fueled by deep resentment and disdain. Considering himself the greatest of the prophets, Zedekiah is outraged that Micaiah dares to claim a lying spirit has deceived the royal prophets. He demands to know how Micaiah can claim to be the sole bearer of God's true word, and how he could possibly know things that the rest of the prophets do not [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests that Zedekiah is questioning what specific action or event occurred that would cause the spirit of God to leave him and transfer to Micaiah [אלשיך].

On a deeper level, this challenge reveals a specific understanding of prophetic hierarchy. According to this framework, prophetic inspiration descends from the highest spiritual level down through the lower ranks, and the prophets are acutely aware of this continuous flow. Zedekiah asserts that he occupies the highest prophetic tier, while Micaiah sits at a lower level that is supposed to be sustained by him. Therefore, he is completely baffled as to how the spirit of God could bypass his superior rank and speak directly to Micaiah without him feeling or knowing about the transition [חומת אנך].
