I Kings 22:5Sefaria

Stepping into a military alliance requires more than just shared troops and weapons; it demands clear direction. When Jehoshaphat agrees to join Ahab in battle, he brings a firm requirement to the table: they must first secure divine approval. As an upright and God-fearing man, Jehoshaphat refuses to make major decisions or ride into combat without first clarifying what God wants [רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. He urges the king of Israel to actively seek and request proper guidance before they launch their campaign [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The timing of this request carries a specific weight. It can be understood as a direct, personal plea to Ahab: even if seeking God is not his usual habit, he should make an exception and do so at this critical moment [מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, the demand is tied directly to the alliance itself, serving as a strict condition. Jehoshaphat is essentially insisting that God must be consulted simply because he is present and participating in the effort that day [מלבי״ם].

This insistence on hearing from God highlights a deep divide between the two leaders. While Ahab leans toward idolatry and surrounds himself with false prophets, Jehoshaphat seeks only the truth. Ahab's prophets attempt to please their royal guest, even using God's name to promise a sweeping victory. However, Jehoshaphat immediately recognizes their deception. He notices that every single prophet speaks in the exact same style, a clear sign of falsehood, since true prophets always deliver their messages with a unique, personal voice [אברבנאל]. Recognizing the charade, Jehoshaphat stands his ground, demanding to hear from a genuine prophet who can accurately reveal God's true will.
