I Kings 22:51Sefaria

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב יְהוֹשָׁפָט֙ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֔יו וַיִּקָּבֵר֙ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֔יו בְּעִ֖יר דָּוִ֣ד אָבִ֑יו וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ יְהוֹרָ֥ם בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ {ס}

As a monarch's reign comes to a close and power transitions to the next generation, royal records often pause to reflect on the king's legacy and place in history. The transition of power from Jehoshaphat to his son highlights his deep connection to the royal dynasty. He is buried in the city of David, who is explicitly referred to as his father. The primary approach among commentators is that this specific mention of David goes beyond a simple genealogical record. Instead, it serves as a testament to Jehoshaphat's character, indicating that he faithfully followed the righteous path of King David and actively continued his legacy.

The change in leadership also brings attention to how the years of the kings of Judah and Israel are calculated. A guiding principle throughout these historical records is that the reigns of the northern kings of Israel are generally measured relative to the years of the kings of the House of David in the south.

Furthermore, the recorded number of years a king ruled does not always represent full calendar years. If a leader takes the throne near the very end of a year, the arrival of the new year might immediately be counted as his second year of rule. In other instances, a stated number of years means that those years have entirely passed. Understanding this method of counting, which accounts for partial years, naturally resolves the apparent timeline gaps and contradictions regarding when various kings took power and how long they ruled [רלב״ג].
