I Kings 22:10Sefaria

A royal gathering on the eve of battle is a moment of both immense grandeur and deep spiritual tension. Two kings sit side by side in a highly public and ceremonial assembly, surrounded by a frenzy of prophetic enthusiasm as they seek guidance for the upcoming war.

The kings are dressed in special attire. Since it is obvious they were not simply clothed as opposed to being unclothed, the primary approach among commentators is that they wore magnificent royal robes, perfectly suited for the solemnity and importance of a high-level military consultation [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The assembly takes place at a threshing floor located in the open space just outside the city gates of Samaria [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Placing an agricultural processing site so close to the city walls was a direct result of the constant threat of enemy attacks and frequent wars with Aram. The residents were forced to process and store their grain near the safety of the fortified city. However, another perspective suggests that the threshing floor does not refer to a physical location at all, but rather describes the seating arrangement of the assembly. According to this view, the kings and their royal entourage sat in a large semicircle, mirroring the shape of a round threshing floor, which allowed everyone in the gathering to see one another clearly [רד״ק].

As the kings hold court, a large group of prophets prophesy before them. These are false prophets, confidently boasting and speaking in the name of God. To make their message more convincing, they use dramatic physical props. For instance, Zedekiah son of Chenaanah crafted two iron horns to symbolize the two united kings who would soon gore the armies of Aram together [רד״ק, אלשיך].

The emergence of prophecy in such a setting is highly irregular. Authentic prophecy requires deep isolation and a tranquil state of mind. In stark contrast, this gathering is loud, crowded, and public. Furthermore, the overwhelming awe inspired by the majestic presence of the kings makes it impossible to achieve the mental focus required for true divine revelation. Despite these impossible conditions, a sudden prophetic spirit does descend upon the prophets. However, this is a spirit of falsehood, deliberately sent by God to mislead them [מלבי״ם].
