I Kings 22:18Sefaria

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־יְהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט הֲלוֹא֙ אָמַ֣רְתִּי אֵלֶ֔יךָ לוֹא־יִתְנַבֵּ֥א עָלַ֛י ט֖וֹב כִּ֥י אִם־רָֽע׃ {ס}

Faced with a harsh prophecy, the king of Israel reacts with a calculated political and personal defense mechanism designed to discredit the messenger in front of the king of Judah. He complains that this specific prophet never has anything positive to say about him [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that Ahab is attempting to strip the warning of its divine authority. By framing the message as a product of deep personal hatred rather than a true word from God, he hopes to invalidate it entirely [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

This accusation of personal bias has a historical basis. Ahab's wife, Jezebel, had previously murdered God's prophets, leading the surviving true prophets to harbor intense resentment against the royal family. Beyond relying on this history to discredit the messenger, Ahab also manages to deceive himself into believing the current warning is false. He justifies this by recalling a previous prophecy of doom he received after sparing the king of Aram, which had not yet come true [אברבנאל].

Despite his public confidence and attempts to write off the prophet as merely a bitter enemy, Ahab is secretly terrified by the warning. This hidden fear ultimately drives his actions on the battlefield. Hoping to outsmart his destined fate, he disguises himself and changes his clothes before entering combat, calculating that the Aramean army is only interested in hunting down the king of Israel [רלב״ג].

However, Ahab's public disrespect and his claims of bias provoke an immediate reaction. To counter the accusation that his words are driven by a personal grudge, the prophet reveals a vision of the heavenly court. This dramatic disclosure is meant to prove beyond any doubt that the harsh decree was finalized directly by God, entirely independent of any human hostility [אברבנאל].
