The march to battle takes place immediately following a dire warning of doom from the prophet Micaiah. It seems surprising that both the king of Israel and the king of Judah would choose to enter the battlefield despite such a clear and severe prediction. However, each leader had his own distinct reasons for proceeding. Ahab, the king of Israel, chose to completely ignore the prophet's words. He dismissed the warning as nothing more than an expression of Micaiah's personal hatred toward him. To justify his disregard, Ahab pointed to a previous harsh prophecy Micaiah had delivered after Ahab released Ben-hadad. Since that earlier prediction of doom never actually came to pass, Ahab felt confident in brushing aside the current warning [אברבנאל].

On the other hand, Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, was a God-fearing man whose decision to fight stemmed from a very careful reading of the prophecy itself. The primary approach among commentators is that even though Jehoshaphat was the one who initially asked to seek guidance from God, the prophet never explicitly forbade him from joining the war. Jehoshaphat understood that the tragic decree was aimed exclusively at Ahab. The prophet had described the army as sheep without a shepherd, while also promising that the rest of the soldiers would return home safely. Because the prophecy did not forbid his involvement, and because he had already given his word to stand beside Ahab in battle, Jehoshaphat felt obligated to honor his promise. He concluded that fighting alongside the king of Israel would not violate the will of God.
