I Kings 22:38Sefaria

The shameful death of King Ahab brings a profound historical and moral closure to his reign. His tragic end serves as the precise fulfillment of the harsh prophecies delivered by God's prophets, acting as the ultimate punishment for his many sins, particularly the unjust murder of Naboth the Jezreelite.

After the battle concludes, someone brings the king's chariot to the pool of Samaria to wash away his blood. This pool, built from stone and lime to gather water [מצודת ציון], becomes the site where the first part of the curse unfolds. As the chariot is rinsed, Ahab's blood drips down and mixes with the water. Dogs then arrive and drink the blood-stained water

The events at the pool carry further elements of deep humiliation, though commentators offer very different perspectives on what else occurred there. The literal understanding is that actual prostitutes, who lacked basic modesty, bathed in that same public pool. Bathing in the water mixed with the dead king's blood represents a complete and final degradation for Ahab However, other traditions interpret this detail symbolically or linguistically. Some suggest that no women were present at all; rather, the blood was washed off the king's weapons Another fascinating tradition links the washing to painted images on the chariot itself. According to this view, Ahab was a cold man lacking passion, so his wife Jezebel painted figures of prostitutes on his chariot to arouse him, and it was these images that were washed away [רש״י, רד״ק]. A Midrashic approach even connects the event to the concept of visions, noting that at this exact moment, the prophetic visions of both Elijah and Micaiah were finally realized [רד״ק].

Ultimately, these events confirm the exact realization of the divine decrees. Micaiah's warning that the king would die in battle was proven true, followed by the fulfillment of Elijah's warning that dogs would lick Ahab's blood as retribution for Naboth [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג]. Yet, a significant geographical challenge arises: Elijah specifically prophesied that the dogs would lick the king's blood in the city of Jezreel, the exact location where Naboth was stoned. How could this happen if the chariot was washed in Samaria? Commentators resolve this by explaining that Jezreel and Samaria are located close to one another. When the chariot was washed in the pool of Samaria, the blood-red water flowed outward, traveling all the way to Jezreel. Once the water reached the precise spot of Naboth's murder, the dogs licked the blood. Through this remarkable sequence of events, the circle was closed, and God's prophecy was fulfilled to the very last detail
